WEFOUNDan english ghost story book

When the Naremore family discovers the Hollow, it seems like an idyllic home, perfect for reforging frayed connections and rekindling love and affection all around. And for a while, it is, made more enchanting by the strange presences that seem to share the house with its new owners. But when old tensions reemerge and a veil of darkness falls over the Naremores, the Hollow may prove to be where everything falls to pieces.

An English Ghost Story is a haunting with an emotion-rich twist, employing the same confident, slow-burn pacing of novels like The Turn of the Screw , letting atmosphere more than anything dictate the reader’s experience.

But make no mistake, this is a horror story, and when things turn for the worse, they do so with alarming ferocity. Newman cleverly couches the darker turns within the characters themselves, letting the human elements — anger, self-loathing, desire for power, and sibling rivalry — enhance the darkness. The horrors feel more real because they’re based in all-too-real aspects of modern life any reader might find familiar.

Montague Rhodes James OM FBA (1 August 1862 – 12 June 1936), who published under the name M. R. James , was an English author, medievalist scholar and provost of King's College, Cambridge (1905–18), and of Eton College (1918–36).

Though James's work as a medievalist is still highly regarded, he is best remembered for his ghost stories , which are regarded as among the best in the genre . James redefined the ghost story for the new century by abandoning many of the formal Gothic clichés of his predecessors and using more realistic contemporary settings. However, James's protagonists and plots tend to reflect his own antiquarian interests. Accordingly, he is known as the originator of the "antiquarian ghost story". [1]

He catalogued many of the manuscript libraries of the colleges of the University of Cambridge . Among his other scholarly works, he wrote The Apocalypse in Art , which placed the English Apocalypse manuscripts into families. He also translated the New Testament apocrypha and contributed to the Encyclopaedia Biblica (1903). His ability to wear his learning lightly is apparent in his Suffolk and Norfolk (Dent, 1930), in which a great deal of knowledge is presented in a popular and accessible form, and in Abbeys ( Great Western Railway , 1925).
