Take a walk through the halls of Cleveland, Sheridan, Muhlenberg and many other elementary schools in Allentown, and you will feel the energy. Students buzz about with excited faces, eager to learn and collaborate with their classmates. Teachers are ready to take on the day.

However, the scene is not the same in many other school districts in Pennsylvania and throughout the country for that matter. Countless schools fight an uphill battle every day against serious issues like violence, bullying and poor academic performance. What is the difference? What factors decide which schools succeed and which ones do not?

A critical factor in the success of schools is a commitment to supporting children's social and emotional health. Research directly shows that children with good social and emotional health perform significantly better in math and reading, and programs that support the social and emotional health of children dramatically improve learning for all. The Allentown School District has made a significant commitment to teaching its students social and emotional skills, and the early results speak for themselves.

Jeff Bearse of Trifecta Technologies Inc. let out a chuckle as he observed the 40 nervous, well-dressed college interns sitting at round tables with water in one glass and iced tea in another.

"I didn't even have the opportunity to intern when I was young," Bearse, the Allentown company's director of delivery services, said.

Trifecta is one of 15 companies whose collective 40 interns are participating in Allentown's first Internship Initiative, the brainchild of a collaboration between City Center Investment Corp. and Air Products.
